In southern China, where I was born, the burning of joss paper is a centuries-old tradition intended to ensure that the spirits of the deceased are well provided for in the afterlife. Each year during the Qingming Festival in April, we would burn paper at the tombs of our ancestors, a ritual to honour and remember those who have passed. Falling seasonal rain often became an unintended part of this ceremony, the flames of the burning joss paper flickering around wet spots, creating intriguing smoke stains. Inspired by this, this series of works is built from countless layers, sometimes thousands, of tiny pieces of burned, wet paper, collaged into a beautiful visual memory of the mix of fire and rain.
